Venue: The Suttie Arts Space
Dates: 16th and 17th June 2026
Time: 3-7pm
Grampian Hospitals Art Trust Project and Exhibitions Team are hosting a series of quilt-making workshops over 4 days with the Refugee Festival Scotland, Healing Arts Scotland participants, Cornhill Primary School and Aberdeen City Council’s Social Work Team’s Young Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking participants.
Participants are invited to create their own vibrant quilt hexagons using an exciting mix of materials from fabric scraps and recycled clothing to unexpected items like old sports gear. They will experiment with a range of creative techniques to bring their quilts to life. Throughout the sessions, the individual hexagons will be stitched together resulting in one large quilt by the end of the week. Celebrating the imagination of everyone involved.
The workshops are drop in and you are welcome to spend as much or as little time as you want.
The patchwork quilt takes inspiration from our ongoing collaborative project with Cornhill Primary School’s P6 class, now in its second year. Since September, the pupils have been acting as curators, creating a brief which two commissioned artists responded to. The resulting exhibition, ‘Aliens, Monsters, Googly Eyes and Galactic Vibes’, includes three patchwork quilts created by Alexandra McGregor unsing recycled sports balls, inspired by the pupils’ love of sport.
A key idea behind the quilts, and the workshops, is that we are all part of a larger patchwork, each piece representing different experiences, cultures, and stories.
