Pattison studied Architecture at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, for one year before transferring in 1974, to the Drawing and Painting Department where he graduated. After graduating he underwent an art teaching course, although he maintained his artistic practice and has been the recipient of many awards. He currently lives and works in Glasgow.
Mostly his paintings have no explicit subject, but explore the formal properties of composition, colour and shape to create vibrant and exciting picture surfaces.
