GHAT has a new opportunity for an artist with an interest in horticulture to work on the Inverurie Community Hospital site. Deadline for applications – Monday 15th April 

After the success of GHAT’s Resonate:Disseminate project, which has now come to a close, we have an opportunity for an artist with an interest in gardening or landscaping, to work with the staff on the Inverurie Community Hospital and Health Centre site. The artist will create artwork for the new Health Centre foyer and develop the patient garden adjacent to Donbank Ward.

The Artist will work closely with NHSG staff and patients on site as well as community groups within Inverurie who work closely with the hospital staff to create new artwork and curate artwork from the GHAT Art Collection for the Health Centre with the aim to:

  • Increase connections between community groups and the hospital
  • Create a better internal and external environment for the main ward on site
  • Develop new opportunities for the staff through working with community groups and the arts
  • Provide a link between the new and original buildings onsite, acknowledging the significance of the hospital to the local area.

The project will be managed by the Senior Manager Projects with support for the collection hangs from the Senior Manager Collections

  • The Artist:
    GHAT is seeking an individual who can demonstrate a strong record of participatory visual arts practice with a background in gardening or landscaping.The role of the artist will be to work with GHAT, Friends of Inverurie Hospital and NHSG staff to develop the patient garden onsite and forecourts within the new Health Centre. They will also create bespoke artwork for the new Health Centre and work with the GHAT Art Collection to select work to be installed throughout the building. A current commission is underway to create bespoke signage for key areas of the hospital. The artist will be encouraged to work alongside this project to create a bridge between the old and new buildings on site.

    Main tasks for this brief:
    The Artist will work with GHAT to prioritise the following tasks.

  • Contact local community groups who work on the site and create collaborations to support this commission.
  • Deliver workshops to users of the site and members of the local community to encourage collaboration onsite.
  • Work with staff from the Donbank Ward and Friends of Inverurie group to develop the patient garden, the forecourts in the Health Centre and green areas across the site
  • Engage with the current commission on-site.
  • Work with the GHAT Art Collection to curate artwork to be installed in the Health Centre.
  • Work with Garioch Heritage Centre and the staff on Donbank Ward to create a stimulating and interesting environment within the Patients day room and the staff room
  • Create artwork for the foyer of the Health Centre

Budget:
This brief covers the 7 month period from May 2019 to December 2019. The budget will include a fee, all travel to Inverurie Community hospital and community visits, all materials, fabrication and install costs.The budget for this brief is £17500 payable in four stages or in a pattern to be agreed between GHAT and the artist.

Experience:
GHAT is looking for someone who is an arts graduate with at least two years experience, and who has gardening or horticulture as a key component of their art practise.

Desired skills:

    • Knowledge of contemporary arts practice at a national and international level.
    • Knowledge of the skills required to deliver a socially engaged participatory project
    • Experience in landscaping or knowledge of horticulture

A panel consisting of key NHSG staff, Friends of Inverurie and GHAT will assess the applications. Shortlisted applicants will be asked to attend an interview in Inverurie on Friday 26th April 2019 with a view to an immediate appointment.
