1943 – 1983

Bel Cowie was born in Dundee.  She trained at Gray’s School of Art and later at Ceramische Fachschule, Berne.  She occasionally painted in oil but mostly water-based mediums, and is probably best known for her screenprints.  Her work often reveals her fascination with Japanese prints and weaving designs; there is always a gentle delicacy in her work.

Cowie was the director of Peacock Printmakers and was an active member of SSA of which she was a member.  She exhibited widely through various exhibitions including RSA, RSW and Compass Gallery Glasgow.
