Poetry and Poem Post Project
A small poetry project was initiated in 1999 by Colin MacDuff, a Research fellow at Robert Gordon University. Colin felt that poems could provide a window both to frame and to illuminate experiences in hospitals that might be ignored or which would otherwise be too difficult to express. He suggested that poems could be short enough to digest when concentration is difficult, but could still provide patients with a feeling of meaning and relevance, so as to give a humanizing point of reference within the confusing hospital environment.
The Poem Post Project makes a selection of short poems available on postcards in wall-mounted racks. It is an interactive project in that a small posting box is situated adjacent to the racks so that patients, staff and visitors can post back to us their own poems or comments. The poem cards are free, and aim to involve local people in composing poems, to encourage new writing and to provide light relief.
Grampian Hospitals Art Trust is also involved in the University of Aberdeen Writers Festival held in May 2007, and we would be very interested in your comments and/or poems. We think that a few well chosen words or a poem can communicate something very powerful, life affirming and/or humorous. So please write to us and send your poems to:
