An exhibition showcasing the work of well known Aberdeen artist, James Furneaux.
Jimmy Furneaux has always shown a commitment to working outdoors, choosing to paint his unique watercolour, pen and ink and gouache pieces ‘on the spot’. His beautiful and highly detailed paintings, many of which are later translated into prints, feature local areas and well known landmarks in and around Aberdeen, often seen from unusual viewpoints.
Working on the spot has led to many interesting encounters, in Aberdeen and abroad, with passers by and local residents often becoming curious, suspicious or even hostile. However, usually when they find out that he is painting their street or house because he finds it visually captivating they come round and have even been known to invite him in for tea.
A former lecturer at Aberdeen College, Jimmy is a respected local artist who has a long standing relationship with Grampian Hospitals Art Trust. This is his second exhibition in the Gallery and in 2003 he was commissioned to make a visual diary on site of the building of the new Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital. The 12 drawings which make up this visual record now hang in the Administration Suite of the Children’s Hospital.
This is a wonderful exhibition of local buildings and well known landmarks which we know will be enjoyed both by collectors of Jimmy Furneaux’ work and those who have the pleasure of discovering it.
